In Avanos the craftmanship of pottery is supposedly being used since
the Hittites era. About 300 smaller and bigger ateliers are to be
found here. Traditionally the profession of a potter is past from
father to the son and from master to apprentice.
Avanos with a population of around 15.000 people, lies on the bank
of the Red River (Kızılırmak). The clay being used comes from this
river and is of a brown red color.
